Historical Fiction Writing Group
Need a fresh pair of eyes on your work for the start of the new year? Let's do it!
Hello! I hope everyone’s new year is off to a wonderful start, and I’d like to welcome all new subscribers to the Historical Fiction Stack. Be on the lookout this month for new chapters of Theda’s Time Machine, as well as an interview with historical fiction author, speaker and radio host Parker J. Cole who shares some of her best research methods and tips on historical accuracy. Don’t miss it!
I also wanted to throw an idea out in the wild. One of my goals this year is to start a writing group. At first I had visions of a local group meeting in a mahogany-lined coffee shop with puffy chairs, but as HFS grows I’d rather get to know this online community better, whose readers come from 23 states and 18 countries. So the idea to create an online community of historical fiction/fantasy writers for paid subscribers won over the puffy chairs. I know I need some fresh eyes on my work, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Also, it would be more cost-effective than online writing courses that can charge multiple hundreds of dollars.
This group would work similar to other online writers groups. Each week a writer would submit a short story or novel chapter, and at the end of the period we submit in the comment section a critique of both positive aspects of the work and where it needs improvement. This would be a great way to meet other historical fiction/fantasy writers and get valuable feedback. It also strengthens your writing muscles by having the courage to submit your work to critique and incorporating the best suggestions into your editing process.
If you are interested in participating, please drop me a line at alisondbull@gmail.com and if there is enough interest we can take it from there.
Have a wonderful day, and happy reading and writing!
